On the front side of the cross the Crucifixion of Christ is depicted with the upcoming Mother of God and John the Theologian, Christ’s beloved disciple. According to legend, they stood next to the Cross during the execution. The Lord came to earth to atone for the sins of mankind. Having died on the Cross, He descended into hell and destroyed its power, freeing the righteous, and resurrected on the third day. The image of the Resurrection of Christ is placed on the reverse side of the cross. Around it is the initial verse of a protective prayer to the Honorable Cross of the Lord. This prayer is read in danger, and also carried with oneself for protection from evil forces.
